Dolors Reig's conference "Educar para las T.E.P."

Dolors Reig is a psychology and studies how new technologies and social networks are shaping humans’ way of thinking and learning, as well as socializing with one another and the world in which we live. During her conference called “Educar para las T.E.P.” (Tecnologias del Empoderamiento y la Participacion) Dolors presents many advantages of living in this amazing global village.

Firstly, she emphasizes the idea of active, critical and productive participation through the appropriate use of webs 2.0. She says that tools such as Facebook and Twitter allow us to write very few characters, if not just clicking a bottom that stands for “I like”. Therefore, Dolors promotes the idea of using blogs not only to foster students’ reading and writing skills, but also to become active participants in our society from a very young age. In my opinion, using blogs in the EFL classroom allow our students to become communication media and being responsible for that.

Secondly, Dolors also talks about web 2.0 tools as a mean of affiliation and recognition. As a result, its teachers and parents’ responsibility to educate young people about values, such as the importance of being respectful towards others opinions and lifestyles. It’s also of paramount importance to teach kids how to disconnect. They need to learn when to stop and switch off from time to time so as to spend some time playing outdoors with other kids.

Lastly, Dolors describes the “connected superhero” as a person who has learnt to use the media to congregate with others who feel and think in the same way so as to fight for shared causes. This integration into a wider social network strengthens people’s bonds and allows them to be heard easily. Nowadays, most and most people have the possibility of having a voice in life and, at the same time, being respected for that. I do believe this is the right road to follow to fully live in a more democratic and free society.

What do you think about living in this huge global vilage?
